A Message from Gary Grief, Executive Director, Texas Lottery Commission

Welcome to the Texas Lottery Website. I'm delighted you have taken the time to learn about the Texas Lottery and the important contributions that the Texas Lottery makes to public education and veterans' assistance in Texas.

When then-Gov. Ann Richards purchased the first Texas Lottery ticket on May 29, 1992, no one could have imagined that an $8 billion business had launched. But here we are. As the Texas Lottery celebrates “30 Years of Winning,” it is regarded as one of the most successful lotteries in the country – because of our staff, vendor partners, players and retailers, most of whom have served their communities tirelessly as “essential businesses” during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Through our robust scratch ticket and draw game methodologies – which are unparalleled in the lottery industry – along with a tremendous amount of hard work and dedication, the Texas Lottery enjoyed another record-breaking fiscal year in FY 2021, which ended on Aug. 31, 2021. For the first time, lottery sales eclipsed the $8 billion mark, shattering the previous record set in FY 2020 by more than $1.4 billion.

The past fiscal year also marked the 13th consecutive year that the Texas Lottery recorded sales growth from the previous year, including an 11th straight year that a new sales record was attained, with $8.107 billion in total sales. Scratch ticket sales alone reached a record $6.617 billion in sales. Boosted by a pair of dueling multi-state jackpots in January 2021, along with our highest in-state draw game sales since FY 2005, the Texas Lottery also generated a record $1.49 billion in total draw game sales in FY 2021. All of these record sales allowed for a total net contribution of $1.998 billion to Texas schools and veterans’ causes, also a new record.
